About Buan Tidal Flat Protected Wetland

Buan Tidal Flat Protected Wetland is located along the west coast of South Korea in Jeollabuk-do province, encompassing a network of tidal flats formed by the interaction of the Yellow Sea tides. These vast expanses of mudflats stretch across kilometers, providing a unique habitat for a diverse range of flora and fauna. The wetland is internationally recognized as a Ramsar site, reflecting its global ecological importance, particularly as a crucial stopover for migratory shorebirds such as the Far Eastern curlew and the Nordmann's greenshank. The area is characterized by nutrient-rich sediments that support abundant benthic organisms which in turn sustain a variety of fish and bird species. Visitors to Buan Tidal Flat can explore walking paths along the coast and observation points designed to offer close views of the birdlife while minimizing disturbance.

Historically, the tidal flat has supported local fisheries and traditional salt farming, both now carefully managed to balance human use with conservation. The wetland's scenic vistas at dawn and dusk provide exceptional opportunities for photography and nature watching. While not equipped for camping, the nearby towns offer visitor facilities, and guided eco-tours are available to enhance understanding of the wetland's ecological value. This area’s intertidal zones also act as natural buffers against coastal erosion, highlighting the wetland’s importance beyond recreation. The Buan Tidal Flat Protected Wetland appeals especially to bird watchers, ecologists, and those interested in Korea's coastal heritage.
